How to Care for Furniture Locks

07/31/2015 Back To Blog

Most people simply use drawer and cabinet locks for keeping their possessions safe without thinking much about their condition. Even though these devices are not exposed to the elements like most of their counterparts, they still require care in order to work properly in the longer term. Find out how to provide it correctly. How to Care for Furniture Locks

Cleaning and Lubrication

These two basic tasks have to be performed at least once a year. More frequent maintenance is necessary in case of extensive use of the locking device.

Clean the furniture door lockset on both sides using damp lint-free cloth - If the item has accumulated stubborn dirt, you can dissolve a little bit of liquid detergent into cool water and dip the cloth into it. Scrub the surface with care especially in the tighter spots.

Use white vinegar for rust removal and lemon juice for removing grease - These compounds must be applied in small amounts with the use of lint-free cloth. For best results, you should bring the vinegar to boil first and let it cool before you use it. If these products do not work for your furniture locks, you can use commercial ones which are safe for both metal and the material that the furniture piece is made of, such as wood or laminate. This is what the specialists of our locksmith company in West Drayton recommend.

Apply graphite powder lubricant to both the lock and key - You must apply the compound directly into the keyway until it comes out. Spread some over the face of the cylinder as well. Cover the key with a thin layer of the lubricant. Use a pencil if you find it easier. Remember to cover the cuts and crevices. Insert the key into the lock and turn it several times to spread the lubricant properly.

General Care and Protection

Operate the locking devices correctly - Make sure that your hands are clean before you use the key. Insert it gently into the keyway and turn it carefully to the side. Do not apply too much pressure on the bow. Surprisingly or not, this is one of the most common causes of broken office keys used for file cabinets.

Allow some room between the internal side of the locking device and the contents of the cabinet or drawer - This is essential for protecting both from accidental damage. If necessary, you can set a barrier between the two.

Cover the entire lockset during furniture or room repair projects - This is important for preventing dust and other particles from getting inside. Cling film should do a good job.

If you notice any problem with a furniture device such as physical damage or improper operation, you can always count on us for reliable lock repair service.
